If you are looking for something to do the next few weekends, the Brandywine Valley Wine Trail is the place to be. During every weekend in March, six Pennsylvania wineries will feature their new wines during the Barrels on the Brandywine tasting event. Tickets for the event are $25 and can be purchased at the participating wineries. The participating wineries are: Black Walnut Winery, Borderland Vineyard, Kreutz Creek Vineyards, Paradocx Vineyard, Patone Cellars, and Penns Woods Winery.

This weekend my husband and I visited Penns Woods Winery for a tasting. The special event tasting includes 5 wines, 7 naturally infused olive oils, 4 aged balsamic vinegars, and a sample of local cheeses. Add $5 more and you can also taste Penn Woods exclusive Red Reserve wines. If you don't have a Passport, you can participate in this special tasting for only $10. Not a bad price for what you get.

Penns Woods Winery has a small, charming tasting room in Chadds Ford, PA. There are a few tables outside where you can enjoy the views of Penns Woods beautiful vineyards during your tasting. You are free to bring food to enjoy with your wine as long as you sit outside. I suggest a quick stop at Whole Foods in Glen Mills for exotic cheeses and crusty bread to pair with the wines you will be tasting.

This month's wines on Penns Woods tasting menu include: Penns Woods Traminette 2012, Penns Woods White Merlot 2012, Bancroft Field Blend Red NV, Penns Woods Proprietor Reserve 2012, Penns Woods Chardonnay Reserve 2012, Bancroft Merlot 2011, and Penns Woods Cabernet 2009. Kathy, Penns Woods tasting expert, served the wines with a friendly smile and an explanation of each of the wines based on what she liked. I prefer the tasting staff to provide their personal opinions about the wines instead of reading off the wine sheet that they give you.

Penns Woods Traminette 2012 was my husband's favorite. It is one of their sweeter white wines with a sweet smell of honey and lemon zest. The wine paired well with a soft, creamy flavorful goat cheese purchased at Whole Foods - Capricho de Cabra Mitica. Although I prefer red wine, I really liked Penns Woods Chardonnay Reserve 2012. The wine is one of Penns Woods award winning wines. You can taste the green apple, but it is extremely smooth and creamy with a vanilla finish, which is different than most Chardonnays. This wine also happened to be one of Kathy's favorites as well.

If you are participating in Barrels on the Brandywine, don't miss Penns Woods Winery. If you aren't participating in the event, be sure to stop by Penns Wood Winery for a tasting. Also, don't forget to stop at Whole Foods and ask the person behind the cheese station for recommendations.
