Penney store closing: List of nationwide J.C. Penney store closings released

Penney store closings were announced on Wednesday with J.C. Penney closing 33 of its under-performing stores. Along with the store closing, 2,000 people will lose their jobs, according to USA Today on Jan.15.

These Penney store closings are slated to happen sooner rather than later. The folks at J.C. Penney will shut down the stores slated to close by early May. A list of the stores on the chopping block are posted at the end of this article.

The Penney store closings are all part of the store’s attempts at a “turnaround” as the troubled retailer expects to save about $65 million a year starting with 2014. The store closings are part of the plan to sweep up after former CEO Ron Johnson whose overhaul of Penney’s included eliminating sales in lieu of everyday low prices. This was not a good move, evident by stocks drastically falling.

In April Myron Ullman III returned as CEO and his fix includes the stores closing as well as the axing of 2,000 jobs. So far the numbers show Myron has done a good job at stabilizing the situation with the sales up in the fourth quarter for stores open at least a year.
