Penn State tops Pitt, 28-9, breaking dual-meet attendance record

In a battle of Pennsylvania, defending NCAA team titlewinner Penn State defeated University of Pittsburgh, 28-9, at Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pa. Sunday.

The Bryce Jordan Center Dual set a new college dual-meet attendance record, with 15,996 fans in the arena, that, according to Wikipedia, seats 15,261 for basketball. (Note: Penn State usually wrestles at venerable Rec Hall.)

Pitt had been leading after the first four matches, but the Nittany Lions tied up the team score in time for intermission. The home team didn’t look back, scoring 19 unanswered team points in the last six matches.

Bonus points were a factor in three matches. Pitt’s Mike Racciato pinned James English with just seven seconds left in regulation in the 141-pound match; for Penn State, top-ranked 165-pounder David Taylor got the fall, and Wes Phipps earned a major decision at 184.

As for the dual-meet attendance record, Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson thinks that could be broken later this month, as his wrestlers travel to Iowa City to face the University of Iowa on Saturday, Dec. 21 in the match added to the schedule after Sanderson and Iowa coach Tom Brands arranged it via Twitter. The last time the two teams met at Carver-Hawkeye Arena back in early February 2013, 15,007 fans saw Iowa topple Penn State, 22-16.
