Penn State hires Franklin, could create headache for Terps

The Penn State Nittany Lions officially hired Vanderbilt's James Franklin as their new head coach, which could potentially be a real problem for Randy Edsall and the Terps.

Franklin has plenty of ties to Maryland from his days as offensive coordinator for the Terps, and he was known for being a great recruiter in the area.

Penn State already has an extensive history of stealing a lot of top players from the Baltimore-Washington area, and now that they have a head coach with great recruiting ties to the region, it seems like the potential is there for a perfect storm type of scenario.

It's worth noting that Franklin did not get any top local recruits at Vanderbilt, so that may be a silver lining, but Penn State is certainly a program on a different level, even with all of the fallout from the rape scandal.

A recruiting showdown between Franklin and Maryland offensive coordinator Mike Locksley could turn into an epic battle for years to come. Then again, if Franklin comes in and starts stealing recruits out of the area, Locksley and Edsall probably won't be around much longer.

All of this could have been avoided if Maryland had simply honored the "head-coach-in-waiting" designation it placed on Franklin at the end of the Ralph Friedgen era, but a change in athletic directors meant the Terps might not keep their word.

Vanderbilt came calling and Franklin took the sure thing, and then Maryland's circus of a head coach search went down, botching the obvious hire of Mike Leach and ending up with Edsall.
