Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA opens new Center for Compassion in Burlingame (Photos)

September 12, 2011

This past Saturday, the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) opened the doors to its new Tom and Annette Lantos Center for Compassion in Burlingame. Funded entirely by private donations, including a major gift from Oracle founder Larry Ellison and his wife Melanie, the new Center honors the late Congressman Tom Lantos, a devoted animal welfare advocate, and his wife Annette.

The state of the art 56,700-square-foot facility on Rollins Road accommodates up to 200 adoptable animals, including up to 45 dogs. The new Center also houses the Society’s Hope Program, which focuses on saving needy animals, its education programs, behavior classes, wildlife rehabilitation for up to 218 native wild animals at a time, a kitten nursery, and an indoor exercise area with a fountain and retractable roof for dogs. The Center also includes a retail store and administrative offices.

With the opening of the new Center, the PHS/SPCA existing Coyote Pt. facility at 12 Airport Blvd. which has served County residents and pets since 1952, will continue to serve as the facility for receiving and housing strays and will remain the facility the public will visit when looking for lost pets. The Spay/Neuter Clinic and monthly low-cost shot clinic also will remain at the Coyote Pt. location.

Members of the public can purchase microchips and/or San Mateo County licenses at either location. If you are looking to volunteer, seasonal and ongoing volunteer opportunities are available at both locations.
