Penguin Prison, The Frail and Double Duchess: a pop trifecta not to be missed

It’s going to be a big weekend for music lovers with Live 105’s Not So Silent Night kicking off tomorrow but if you can’t wait and need a dose now, head down to the Rickshaw Stop tonight! You can catch New York electro-DJ, Penguin Prison performing with Bay Area’s own The Frail and Double Duchess.

New York singer and producer, Chris Glover is mum about the meaning behind his Penguin Prison moniker but given his tune, “Don’t Fuck With My Money” and its vivid Occupy Wall Street music video, we might hazard a guess that it’s something to do with those dishonest suits on Wall Street who are caught up in their own greed, unable to see beyond their psychological cell block which should one day become a physical one.

Whatever the meaning, it is no mystery that Penguin Prison makes lyrically-astute music with gravitas set to funky electro-pop beats and catchy hooks. As Penguin Prison he is also known for pumping disco-infused remixes of Ellie Goulding’s “Starry Eyed”; “I Am Not a Robot” by Marina and the Diamonds; and “It’s Time” by Imagine Dragons.

His eponymous studio album released in 2011 received good reviews but Glover made other earlier forays into stardom. They included singing in a gospel choir alongside Alicia Keys; playing in punk bands; and then being in a boy band. Though none brought him mainstream success, all that experience has no doubt fashioned his Penguin Prison alter ego. And this time, he gets in right on the money with infectious tracks like “Animal, Animal“, “Fair Warning” and “Desert Cold” continuing to gain traction, in tandem with his remixes. You better believe he is, as The Guardian newspaper described ‘a one-man pop machine’.

Opening for Penguin Prison are The Frail who will be showcasing their own brand of synth-pop from their upcoming record, “Love Death Legend” which is scheduled for release in March. Lead singer for The Frail, Daniel Lannon said: "We are so happy to be playing alongside Penguin Prison and Double Duchess tonight." Currently back in the studio with producer, Patrick Brown of Different Fur Studios, the foursome are no doubt looking forward to playing some of their new tracks for a live audience.

Earlier this year two new tracks, "Back To Me" and "You Just Want To Leave" were picked up and highlighted by Fuse and MTV respectively, proving that these boys even without the help of a label have already found a fanbase with their upbeat electro hits driven along by Lannon's strong falsetto. They are also working on a tour to SXSW and the rest of the US early next year. But if you can't wait, tonight will be a great opportunity to hear them live in an intimate setting.

And last but by no means least is the queer electro-hop of SF’s own, Double Duchess. If the hip-hop happy pop of “Bucket Betch” is anything to go by, this colorful duo is going to kick off one helluva party at the Rickshaw Stop tonight.
