Pelosi to be excommunicated?

After yesterday's article on Nancy Pelosi standing with the Obama administration against her own church, a frequently asked question on Twitter can be summarized as one simple interrogative.

"Why doesn't the Catholic church excommunicate Nancy Pelosi?"

It's a good question.

To start with, excommunication is supposed to be a tool, part of the repentance process. Think of it as bringing a type of societal pressure on the excommunicated.  Fellow Catholics are basically to have nothing to do with the excommunicated.

In this case, what would excommunication do? It would probably probably be redundant, since Pelosi has seemingly never agreed with the Catholic church on anything. She can say she's a Catholic all she likes, but if she expresses belief in none of the doctrines, she might be, at best, a Christian -- a proclaimed follower of Jesus Christ -- but can't claim Roman Catholicism as her specific church.

Would such a stigma from the Catholic heirarchy do anything to Pelosi? Unlikely. Who does she associate with? Other pro-abortion Democrats. She might not even notice the excommunication.

In addition, you might have noticed somwthing interesting in American politics come election year. Namely, how many politicians make campaign stops in churches.

However, there are exceptions: politicians don't campaign in Catholic churches.  Why is that?

Because, under United States law, the Catholic church cannot officially endorse a candidate.  If they do, the church's tax-exempt status can be revoked. Individual Bishops can like candidates, and openly support their positions or programs, but the church, as a whole, cannot support any one person for any one position.

Considering the interesting things that lawyers do with words, excommunicating Pelosi could be seen as an endorsement of any other candidate running against her.  After that?  Considering what this administration has already done to Catholic charities and organizations, nothing good will happen.

At the end of the day, excommunicating Nancy Pelosi is much like excommunicating Adolf Hitler (who was also "raised Catholic," if you stretch the definition). When Hitler ruled Nazi Germany, he tried to bring back the worship of pagan deities like Odin and Thor (not Anthony Hopkins and Chris Hemmingsworth).  The church did not excommunicate him for three very good reasons -- one, all Nazis had been excommunicated in the early 1930s; two, Hitler had excommunicated himself; and three, Hitler's friend Mussolini had the Vatican surrounded.  Not only would it be redundant, and not do any good, it would be suicidal.

Nancy Pelosi has proclaimed herself opposed to the Catholic church, and thus has essentially excommunicated herself; and Pelosi's friend Obama has the churches surrounded by the IRS. Not only would it be redundant, and not do any good, it would be suicidal.

PERSONAL OPINION: since people have made it a point to whine that this is my personal opinion, that I don't know what I'm talking about, etc, it should probably be made clear....

Nancy Pelosi is a liar.  She has no clue about Catholic doctrine. She is a perfectly San Francisco creature, mostly in that she is so far to the left, even many liberal Catholics look conservative in comparison, and has a tendency to warp everything to her point of view, including perverting what is actual Catholic doctrine into whatever best suits her viewpoint.  It's in her history, she's done it before, she'll do it again, and she will continue to do so for as long as she's in the public eye.  The Catholic church would be well within its rights to metaphorically throw her under the bus.

However, my personal opinon is also that current trends would probably call out the dogs of government on the Catholic church in America. And it would be a bad idea, and completely unnecessary.
