Pelosi's health care bill set for Saturday vote

House bill H.R. 3962, the massive 1,990 page health care bill, is set to be voted on on Saturday night. This expensive, expansive bill is the Democrats’ proposal to resolve the health care situation in the country, and knowing they have a majority in terms of pure numbers in the House, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi believes it will be passed. This bill will permanently, and destructively, create a massive, government-run health care system and end private choice.

The Wall Street Journal calls this bill one of, “…the worst bills Congress has ever seriously contemplated.” (November 1, 2009) The bill will create 111 new bureaucracies according to the House Republican Conference, including a Program of Administrative Simplification, a program that will be completely unnecessary if the House members make the simple vote to defeat this bill. ACORN is even allowed to assist the Commissioner in reaching “vulnerable populations”, words that should cause chills in anyone, and further tying this corrupt organization into our government.

Final numbers regarding the cost of the bill are not available, but it is estimated to cost $2 trillion over the next 10 years, but much of this estimate is from projections for years 5-10, and includes funding from cuts in Medicare, which is already currently underfunded in excess of $37 trillion over the next 75 years. The bill calls for the end of privately sold insurance beginning in 2013, so all insurance would come from the government. These debts, on top of the current national debt, will saddle the next generations with amounts that can never be repaid, and will turn our democracy into a socialist state.

The bill also includes, despite promises to the contrary, funding for abortions. Two Representatives are trying to introduce an amendment removing abortion funding entirely, but they are being thwarted by Pelosi. Pro-life Democrat Bart Stupak and Republican Joe Pitts are being shut out of the process completely, while a supposed pro-life amendment proposed by conservative Democrat Brad Ellsworth is being considered since it simply provides a loophole but still provides federal funding of abortions by requiring such funding to go through a private contractor. Bearing in mind Planned Parenthood receives a full third of their revenue from the federal government, and according to one former director are setting goals to increase the number of abortions performed in order to increase profits, this amendment seems to be the Planned Parenthood amendment, not a pro-life amendment. While it may be years before the legislation known as Roe v. Wade passed by the Supreme Court in 1973 can be voted on to overturn it, in the meantime, Congress should never provide funding for abortions, if for no other reason than it defies the power outlined for Congress, to “…promote the general Welfare….” America exists on the principle of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”, and this bill provides a denial of life, the most basic right of anyone.

There is still time to contact members of Congress to encourage them to vote down this bill. The House Switchboard number is (202) 224-3121, and a feedback form web page can be found at http://www.house.gov/house/house_comments.shtml to send an e-mail. This is a crucial moment in American, and even world, history, and we cannot stand by.
