On Tuesday in Washington, D.C. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) condemned GOP House Speaker John Boehner and the Republican leadership in the House for their continued push to destabilize current bipartisan Senate negotiations on ending the republican government shutdown and the debt-ceiling crisis.
Stating that the Senate has made positive progress in bipartisan negotiations, Leader Pelosi remarked, “That progress evidently has struck fear in the hearts of the House republicans whose reckless radical behavior has called upon them to sabotage the bipartisan effort in the United States Senate. This is Day 15 of the shutdown which has hit our country hard and harder by the day.”
Pelosi pointed out that if the debt ceiling is not raised, the economy and global standing of the United States of America will suffer greatly. In addition, everyday Americans will feel it in their student loans, car payments, mortgages, small business loans and 401ks.
Furthermore, she noted that Speaker Boehner’s earlier comments indicated that they do not have the votes to pass another far right bill and that they actually have enough reasonable members of their caucus who would vote with the Democrats in the House to pass a clean continuing resolution to fund the government and debt ceiling increase.
Rather than support a clean bill, however, members of the House republican leadership continue to find ways to create an atmosphere of non-cooperation, demanding more than a fair bipartisan agreement would allow.
“Time is money,” Pelosi stated. Continuing, she said, “Time is money. This is going to be very costly to our economy even if eventually we do lift the debt ceiling, the cost in interest payments will be in the billions of dollars.
“This republican act of sabotaging of any effort to move forward is a luxury our country cannot afford,” she added.
