Pelosi earns her thirty pieces of silver

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) yesterday promised to join with the Obama administration against the Catholic Church, requiring Catholic individuals and institutions to buy health insurance plans that cover sterilizations and artificial contraceptives, including those that induce abortions.

Of course, the Catholic church has disagreed with this move by the Obama administration.  It has protested and has started a petition, since this goes against the philosophy of everything inherent in the Catholic faith

When asked her position on the matter, Pelosi replied, “First of all, I am going to stick with my fellow Catholics in supporting the administration on this. I think it was a very courageous decision that they made, and I support it.”

Um, excuse me? The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has denounced this.  The Pope has denounced this.  Catholic theology has always been against it.  Who exactly are these fellow Catholics she cites?

Perhaps Nancy Pelosi means her fellow liberals in the Senate.  In which case, how is this courage?  It is not an act of courage to do what is popular with the people you hang out with.  It is not an act of courage to have a federal government cracking down on a church for having a conscience. It is hardly an act of courage to take the same position you have always had -- NARAL gives Pelosi a 100% pro-abortion voting record.

In the words of The Princess Bride, " I do not think it means what you think it means.

Who does Speaker Pelosi think she's standing up to? People she has seemingly never agreed with. She was "raised" a Catholic, yet seems to hold no Catholic positions on anything, except maybe the war in Iraq.

It is an act of courage if one is going against the flow; taking an unpopular stance against people who are bigger than you, because your conscience will not allow you to act any other way.  But, as Pelosi has said before, she doesn't believe in conscience.

Pelsoi says that she was raised a Catholic.  Raised from what? A crypt? She comes from San Francisco, so that's not completely out of the question, granted.

So, who exactly is she standing up to? No one.

Though it is possible she did not mean "standing up to", but she meant "stepping on."

At the end of the day, it's easy to stand behind the playground ruffian who is beating up on the nerdy fat kid. It takes a spine to stand in-between the bully and his victim.

To side with the government in this is not an act of courage. It is the act of a bully.  And for Pelosi to pretend that it is anything else is the act of a coward.
