For a project that is intended to unite, it sure is causing a lot of division in our nation. The mega mosque to be build just a couple of blocks away from Ground Zero is causing much controversy despite claims by Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, Chairman of Cordoba Initiative, that the intent is to improve relations between the West and the Muslim community.
Many are outraged at the mere idea that a mosque would take residence so close to the location in which so many lives were taken by Muslim extremists. Although it is well within the Constitutional rights of citizens of the United States of America to practice freedom of religion, one must ask if it is a wise choice to build a multi-million dollar mosque in that particular location. Even Senator Harry Reid, Democrat from Nevada, stated that he thinks they should find another location.
President Barack Obama, during the traditional Ramadan dinner at the White House, stated that Muslims should be able to practice their religion freely. He made no mention of the impact the decision to build at Ground Zero would have on American families who lost loved ones on 9/11. Later, during a trip to the Gulf, he said that he was only referring to religious freedoms which make America what it is and not to whether or not building at that location was a wise decision.
Many called for an investigation into the funding of the mosque at Ground Zero and this request was dismissed and even labeled "un-American" by Mayor Bloomberg of New York. Nancy Pelosi, however, thinks it is necessary to investigate the funding of the opposition to the mosque. Absurd. Will she also suggest that taxpayers fund this investigation?
This has nothing to do with taking away anybody's 1st Amendment rights. Sensitivity and common sense would demand another location. Those responsible for the "community center" should not have a problem with changing locations if they are truly attempting to mend relations with the West.
November is around the corner, Chandler, so think about what direction you want this country to go and vote accordingly! The current track is a travesty.
