Pelicans trade rumors suggest the team is shopping Eric Gordon again. These latest New Orleans Pelicans trade rumors have Gordon included in discussions that could even lead to a three-team deal. According to a report from late Friday (Jan. 10), the front office has been making calls around the league to gauge the interest other franchises might have in acquiring the shooting guard.
Gordon is in the second year of a four-year, $58 million contract that the team signed him to. It was an act of desperation at the time, with the franchise matching an offer sheet that the Phoenix Suns had extended. Rather than lose one of their prime assets to free agency, the team probably overpaid to keep him in town. He hasn't exactly put up superstar numbers for the team during his time in New Orleans and is currently averaging just 15.6 points per game. He did score 27 points against the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 10, though, showing he could still be a big-time scorer.
At just 25 years old, Eric Gordon still has a lot of basketball in front of him. The plan with these fresh New Orleans Pelicans trade rumors could simply be to free up salary on a team that might be falling out of contention in the Western Conference. With bad injuries to Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson, it will be very tough for the team to remain competitive. Trading off an asset like this could also yield several draft picks to help add even more youth to the future of the franchise. While no deal appears imminent, slippage in the standings could lead to one taking place well before the February deadline.
