“Imprint” transcends its personal origins, bridging the intimate and the public. It sheds light on the ways artists of different media can work together, transcending boundaries of form and genre. ”Imprint” provides audiences the opportunity to engage with the artwork through different artistic mediums (visual art, dance, sound) and to consider how images might interact with and inspire dance and music. The project is an extended exploration of distance and mediation. How do human beings maintain personal intimacy over physical distances? How do artists collaborate despite differences in media/material?
Rather than either choosing music that inspired her before she made the dance, or inviting musicians to make music when the dance was already created, Kao uses a visual score to act as a unifying element outside both (time-based) genres. In order to achieve this effect, the composer and visual artist Gretchen Jude provided a third (visual) mode, creating on a postcard pair a single image designed to elicit a time-based response in both music and movement. The postcard diptych was then separated, with one half sent to the choreographer Peiling Kao and the other sent to a musician. The choreographer and musician then each create a single work in response to the image on their postcard. Eventually the postcard pair is rejoined in the context of a performance. Eight postcard compositions have been created and sent by one composer to one choreographer from rural Japan in summer 2011 and 2012.
