A pedestrian was in critical condition Sunday after a man allegedly drove over him three times before a bystander came to his rescue and pulled the driver from behind the wheel Saturday in southwest Atlanta.
Still, the victim was left pinned beneath the car until officers could respond to help.
The incident happened around 11:40 p.m. at 670 Clover St., police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said.
Officers responded to the scene after getting a 911 call about a person struck by a vehicle.
“Upon their arrival the units located the victim lying in the roadway and a vehicle on top of him,” Officer Jones said.
Firefighters responded and removed the victim who was trapped under the vehicle. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition, Officer Jones said.
A witness, Mr. Johnathon Johnson, told officers the suspect was in the area drinking alcohol before he hit the victim with his vehicle.
“After striking the victim with his vehicle the suspect drove over the victim then stopped,” Officer Jones said. “The suspect placed the vehicle in reverse and then backed over the victim who was lying in the roadway.
“The suspect then put the vehicle in drive and drove over the victim again. The car remained on top of the victim until the listed witness, forcibly removed the suspect from behind the wheel of the car.”
The victim, whose name has not been released, suffered several fractures and a lacerated liver, Officer Jones said.
The suspect was also transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and a Fulton County Search Warrant was obtained for his blood and urine.
The suspect was read his Miranda warning and refused to make a statement. He may face other charges once his blood and urine tests are completed.
