Police have one 24-year-old male suspect in custody at this time in connection with a shooting incident that occurred Tuesday morning at 312 Pearl Street in Rockmart.

According to Rockmart Police Chief Keith Sorrells, it is too early in the investigation to reveal the name of the suspect or a possible motive in the shooting.

The shooting left two women injured.

Police were dispatched to the residence just before 11 a.m. Tuesday morning when neighbors called 911 to report multiple gunshots in the area. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered one victim sitting on the side of the road with her head wrapped in a bandage and awaiting their arrival.

One female victim was shot in the neck and shoulder area with the bullet passing clean through and exiting the back shoulder. She was airlifted with non life threatening injuries.

The second female victim who was waiting for police arrival was reportedly in the home at the time of the shooting. She also suffered non life threatening injuries as a passing bullet grazed her head. The woman refused any medical treatment. She was able to talk with investigators regarding the incident as well as the suspect.

The Rockmart Police Department along with the Polk County Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) are working together in a joint effort to thoroughly investigate the details of the case.

The suspect was detained without incident when he returned to the scene of the shooting. No formal charges have been filed at the time of this publication.
