Update: Pearl River falls below flood stage in Jackson; flood warning canceled
Jackson, Miss. -The swollen Pearl River through the capital city has crested four feet above flood stage after excessive rainfall over the past several weeks.
According to the National Weather Service's Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service (AHPC), the Pearl River reached a max height of 32.04 feet on Tuesday. The flood stage in Jackson is 28 feet.
The river was originally forecast to crest at 32.5 feet Wednesday morning but has since fallen to 31.01 feet as 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The current river forecast from the AHPC calls for the Pearl River to fall below flood stage in Jackson by late Friday.
The entire length of the Pearl River is above flood stage but falling from Philadelphia down through southern Mississippi into southeastern Louisiana.
Several other rivers around the state remain above flood stage but are also falling including the Big Black River near Bentonia, at West and near Bovina, the Big Sunflower River at Sunflower and the Chickasawhay River at Leaksville.
Above normal rainfall so far this month combined with much above normal rainfall in December resulted in many rivers topping their flood stages over the past week.
A quick-moving cold front is expected to bring additional rainfall of a quarter to half-inch across the state late Thursday into Friday, which could result in more minor rises on area rivers.
A more significant storm system with heavy rainfall is possible by mid-next week.
