And the 2014 “World’s Ugliest Dog” title goes to – “Peanut.” The 2-year-old mutt from North Carolia took home top honors in the ugly dog search, held annually at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California. And no one will argue that this wild-looking canine is most certainly, undoubtedly, quite ugly.
Close to thirty dogs competed in the competition, which is in its 26th year. No Westminster dog show here. These mutts are the Alpha dog opposite.
Peanut has a face that only an owner could love, and barely at that. The Chihuahua-Shih Tzu mix has untamed hair with a butt-crack part down the center, eyes that are so far off to the side of his face that they resemble fish eyes, and a tiny protruding mouth with misshapen teeth. Yikes.
The New York Daily News carried a couple of close ups of Peanut. Be forewarned…
All kidding aside, the ugly dog’s owner, Holly Chandler of Greenville, North Carolina, said that Peanut was burned badly as a pup, and although his unsightly face was not the result of being burned, Peanut’s bald spots on his body do add to his horrid look.
Chandler entered Peanut into the competition in hopes that they could bring attention to animal abuse. Peanut’s victory solidified his place in the annals of ugly dogs. Chandler took home a trophy and the top prize winning of $1,500, which she plans to donate.
“We’re trying to use him as a poster child for what can happen to animals who are abused,” she said.
According to The Associated Press, the dogs entered into the contest are scored by “a three-judge panel in several categories, including special or unusual attributes, personality and natural ugliness.”
Writes the AP: “The past five winners have included a duck-footed beagle, boxer and basset hound mix with a waddle, a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix with a protruding tongue and short tufts of hair and a Chihuahua with a missing eye and a camel's back.”
