Summer time is a great time to experiment in the kitchen with new recipes, especially with your family because you have so much more free time when the kids are home from school. One of my favorite recipes to make with the kids is a mug cake. It’s so fast and easy. All you have to do is to mix all of the ingredients together, pop it in the microwave, and in a few minutes you have some amazing cake goodness. Add ice cream, chocolate sauce, sprinkles, or whipped cream to your mug cake and you have yourself a delicious dessert. When the kids are older, and know how to work the microwave, it is an easy dessert for them to make by themselves.
This recipe was inspired by a peanut butter mug cake I found on Pinterest. When baking my own, I wanted to add some chocolate. The choices I had in my pantry were chocolate chips (which would taste great) or Nutella, and the family consensus was Nutella. You could add anything - chocolate chips, sprinkles, marshmallows, Nutella, chocolate sauce, or any chocolate candy to your mug cakes after stirring together all of the ingredients. Mix it together and pop it in the microwave. If you do not want peanut butter, substitute the peanut butter for cocoa powder.
If you wanted to make these for parties (or even just for a family fun night), especially a sleepover, you could easily have a mug cake dessert bar. Have the kids measure out the ingredients, add the filling they want, and pop it in the microwave. Where you have fillings like sprinkles, chocolate chips, peanut butter, white chocolate chips, Andes mints, marshmallows, chocolate candies, ect. And then the ingredients needed in another station with bowls and mugs. Then, once it is out, have a topping bar where they can choose from things like frosting, ice cream, cool whip, sprinkles, chocolate sauce, ect. And enjoy a fun night with the dessert of your choice.
