“This is awesome!” a lady was overheard saying Saturday morning at the Peachtree road farmers market, and so it was. On a beautiful morning at the Cathedral of St Philip on Peachtree road over forty vendors were plying their wares to several hundred attendees and quite a few dogs as well.
By 10 am the boisterous market was in full swing and a standing room only crowd was viewing a cooking demonstration in progress by Jenny Levison local chef and owner of Souper Jenny.
The weather was mild on Saturday and in the northeast corner of the market the shade is plentiful and this is where people tend to congregate. The vendors who are lucky enough to have stalls in this area seem to do a brisk business.
If you are hungry or thirsty, there are also vendors who prepare food and drinks on-site like coffee, smoothies, and crepes. In particular, at the end of the back row there is a mobile wood-fired pizza oven known as Moto Bene. It was mobbed with people, apparently for the creation known as the “breakfast pizza”, which was delicious.
Across the way from Moto Bene, the H&F Bread Company was preparing made to order BLT's on the spot. They also had a very large assortment of fresh loaves baked the night before.
One of the specialty products unique to the PTRFM is charcuterie from the Spotted Trotter. They had a variety of homemade sausages, of which one was the Pork Belly and Rabbit Sausage with Figs which, it was later determined, was phenomenal!
Besides the abundance of dogs, this weeks market seemed to reflect the changing seasons, with the majority of the fresh produce leaning toward the green side, like okra, bok choi, collards and kale and beans. There was also grapes, squash and eggplant to be had as well.
Two Airedales that could have actually been culled from the same litter sparked a conversation between their owners, “Do you think they realize they look identical?”
