If you’re off to see the Wizard this Saturday, you’re in for a more adult oriented telling of the famed tale.
While the midnight mass fans of Peaches Christ will be prepared, others who don’t know of the drag queen’s live reinventing movie classics will be in for quite a surprise when she makes her own “Wizard Of Odd,” prior to screening the classic Judy Garland film.
Like she’s done with so many other movies, Peaches drags up “The Wizard of Oz,” complete with “RuPaul Drag Race” winner Sharon Needles in the role of the Wicked Witch and Peaches her self taking on the role of Peachy Gale. And while the movie is family friendly, Peaches “Odd” is anything but.
“The humor will definitely be geared more towards adults. The Witch doesn't send a field of poppies to deter us from making it to the emerald city but instead we're confronted with a sea of poppers,” Peaches laughs. And she says this witch will be more than wicked but “a real bitch.”
While the movie has been a family favorite for years, Peaches is aware of it’s important in the gay community. “The whole thing is just so gay, gay, gay. It stars the ultimate gay icon and she gets to go to a completely fabulous place where the costuming is perfect, the battle between good and evil is over a pair of shoes, and her best friends are three fantastic nelly queens who know how to sing and dance,” she points out. “ I think as queer people we often don't feel like we fit in to our home environments and Oz represented a fantastical place of magic and acceptance.”
Besides promising a pre-show that is complete on its own merit (and screening the movie just icing on the cake), Peaches will also transform the mezzanine of the Castro Theatre into a bar called the Wizard Of Booze Barroom and the drink special is going to be something green.
Besides Needles, “Odd” has quite a cast of characters including Suppositori Spelling, Raya Light, Cousin Wonderlette, Peggy L'eggs and Heklina as the Wizard of Odd. “You know, a fraud,” Peaches jokes about Heklina.
Oh and let’s not forget Dorothy (er Peachy’s) dog. “There is indeed a Toto who happens to be a drag queen super-fan named Annecy. She really knows her stuff about drag culture and the history of queens. She's sixteen years old and will be flying into SF from North Carolina to play the role. I'm really looking forward to working with her, and hopefully helping to further corrupt her,” she laughs.
To see either the 3pm or 8pm show, you can actually get a seat in any price range you prefer – from $30-100. $30 (or a bit less if you use the PC code on Peaches’ webite) gets you a ticket in advance.
