Fresh fruit distributor, Wawona Packing Company located in Cutler, California is voluntarily recalling specific lots of stone fruits packed between June 1, 2014 and July 12, 2014, because they may have been contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. Wegmans and Mrs. Green’s are two local supermarkets that have pulled stone fruits that could have been infected. (Update on July 24: Trader Joe’s has just notified its customers about possibly affected fruit sold in their stores. Click here for full details.)

Listeria is a serious form of food poisoning that can cause illness and even death in newborns, pregnant women or those with compromised immune systems. More information about listeria can be found here.

Wawona found evidence of listeria in internal testing at their California factory, although there have been no illnesses reported. The company has sanitized and cleaned its facility, including the packing lines and equipment. Subsequent testing has been negative for listeria.

Local Princeton supermarkets have already checked their suppliers to see if they were carrying any fruit affected by the recall. Those that were have removed them from their shelves. The fruits are yellow peaches, white peaches, white nectarines, yellow nectarines, plums and pluots. The recall involves both conventional and organic produce.

Wegmans has removed any stone fruits it carries from Wawona, and also baked goods that contain that fruit. If you’ve bought fruit or fruit-filled baked goods between June 1 through July 12, you can get a refund. If you have no receipt, go to the customer service desk and they will help you to approximate what you bought and issue a refund. Details about their recalled fruit are here, and details about which baked goods are affected are here.

West Windsor’s Mrs. Green’s had organic nectarines supplied by Wawona and they were taken off the shelves. No produce from Mccaffrey’s was involved.
