Peace dove attacks prompts petition to Vatican

According to the Christian Post, Pope Francis' peace dove faux pas has prompted one animal rights group to launch a petition imploring the head of the church to cease and desist in releasing these gentle doves in any future events or rituals.

During an Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square by the Pope on January 26th, two white doves were released as a symbol of peace. They were immediately attacked by birds of prey violently and witnessed by all who attended the ritual. The culprits were a seagull and a crow. The doves managed to get away, but not before suffering the loss of feathers and pecking. Video of this incident went viral quickly.

As a result, now has a petition posted by Chris Wolverton has reached 11,823. They hope to hit 12,000.

The petition offers alternatives to peace doves that would not harm any animals or birds such as the planting of white poppies and the creation of paper white cranes.

It is evident that a pope named for St. Francis, the patron saint of animals, should seek to protect all creatures, furred to feathered, from harm. Continuing to send peace doves out just because they look pretty is not an option after this shocking incident.
