GUILFORD--- Alex Speed was one of the best players in the Penobscot Valley Conference (PVC) as a sophomore.
Speed scored 17 goals during the 2012 season to help the Piscataquis community high school (PCHS) Pirates to a 7-5-3 record and a berth in the class C tournament.
She earned all conference first team. Speed earned athlete of the week during week six of the 2012 fall season.
Chelsea Baillargeon was one of the best defenders in the conference, this season she will be counted on to play a different position. She earned third team all conference honors a sweeper.
"Alex Speed is coming off a great sophomore season with 17 goals as our striker and had a great summer season,"PCHS coach Joe Gallant said. "Chelsea Baillargeon is one of the toughest defenders in the league and will be called upon to play more in the middle of the field instead of as our sweeper."
Mariah Pettit excelled at track as a sophomore this past spring. She placed 3rd in the 100 and 2nd in the 200 at the PVC's.
Pettit, Sarah Taylor, Michaela Pratt, Delani Bennett, and Elaine Riitano will be among the key players for the Pirates.
"Junior newcomer Mariah Pettit, brings a lot of speed and strength to this team. She could play either wing position and may see time at center mid,"Gallant said. "Junior Sarah Taylor will be looked upon to control the middle of the field as our center mid."
Gallant added, "senior Michaela Pratt does a great job as a half back and will be looked upon to set up the front line. Sophomore Delani Bennett and senior Elaine Riitano will be looked upon to handle the goal keeping responsibilities."
With the offense of Speed, the defense of Baillargeon, and the strong nucleus returning, the Pirates are hoping to be playing in the postseason again in 2013.
"This is a team returning seven starters with plenty of experience so we will be looking to be in the middle of the pack during the playoff hunt,"Gallant said. "Dexter, Howland (PVHS), and Greenville pose the biggest threat with FA (Foxcroft Academy) a question mark as they have a strong freshmen class coming in this fall who will help them immediately."
PCHS will open the season with home games against Greenville and Lee Academy. Click here for the full schedule.
