A whirlwind of activity surrounds seniors at this time of year and the seniors at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) are no different. This month features the Senior Show and graduation and of course art exhibits!
The “Senior Show & Celebration” will be combined with May’s First Friday. The public showing will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the upper floors. On First Friday, the main gallery and atrium will remain open until 9 p.m. Artwork from the Class of 2014 will fill five floors of the college. A variety of media will fill 60,000 square feet. The media will include wearable art, animation, illustration, photography, package and skateboard design, painting, and printmaking. The seniors will be in attendance interacting with the public on First Friday. Many of their works will be for sale. The Senior Show will then run through the end of May.
The 32nd annual commencement Saturday. The commencement speaker will be Deborah Obalil, executive director for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design. The commencement will be held at 11 a.m. in the Ann & Richard Barshinger Center for Musical Arts in Hensel Hall at Franklin & Marshall College.
During the commencement ceremonies, Gail Anderson will receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts, according to Mary Colleen Heil, PCA&D president. Anderson is a designer, a writer, and an educator. She is a partner at Anderson Newton Design in New York.
The remainder of the summer, the gallery will feature various selected artwork from the college’s program. The exhibit in fact is called “Selected Artwork from the BFA Program” and will run from the June First Friday on the 6th through the 1st of August. Artwork from upperclassmen will be featured.
The PCA&D is located at 204 N Prince Street. Admission is free and the exhibits are open to the public. Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. It is closed weekends, Memorial Day and for the July 4th holiday. PCA&D is handicapped accessible.
