Aliens: Colonial Marines is not that bad. There, I said it. I believe that its main fault is that it just ended up being solid, instead of being super uber, epically spectacular. Yeah, seven years can do that to a game in development. I can honestly say that I'm actually having a blast playing it, single-player and co-op. Sure, it might be linear, but what I signed up for when purchasing this game, is that I wanted to obliterate aliens in atmospheric environments that pay homage to the movies. In that regard, it succeeds. The story so far is forgettable, but in the end it's all about having fun. Fending off swarms of xenomorphs can get tense on higher difficulties, especially in some instances where ammo can run low. It's actually paced fairly well. We can go on forever about what went wrong and what went right, so let's change gears a bit and actually focus on the PC release list, which is the actual topic. Totally got sidetracked.
So as Aliens: Colonial Marines becomes a week old, what's in the lineup for this week? Well, if you like skin tight nano-suits adorned in a super muscular body structure that gives you powers, you've probably been following the third entry of the Crysis series, Crysis 3. The original Crysis on the PC was a game way ahead of its time. With the obvious graphical extravaganza aside, the gameplay was also pretty good, giving you a jungle sandbox to play in where you felt like a predator. Crysis 2, while still graphically capable, lost a bit of the original Crysis's freedom, making the game feel a bit more linear, even if it did provide some verticality in a ruined New York City.
Crysis 3 seems to balance out the two predecessors. It still takes place in New York City, but the entire city now features an urban rainforest complete with: towering trees, dense foliage and pristine rivers. And since everyone is doing bows these days, you'll also get a predator bow. But the cool part? You can pin enemies to walls with your arrows. I foresee a bloody good time happening there, even with the new Ceph weapon additions. Hopefully this sandbox Crysis 3 puts me in, will give me the same hunter versus prey mentality I got with the original. Here's the entire PC game release list for this week, if you made it down this far:
