“4/8” opened with Downton Abbey working toward a grand ball in London. It is eight months later & Lady Edith went abroad to have her baby. She returns & claims she had a daughter then gave it up to a family. She still doesn't know where Michael is & wants to get on with her life at Downton.
Lady Rose goes to a nightclub in London & meets the Prince of Wales. Lady Mary accepts an invitation to lunch with Charles Blake. Thomas Barrow is agitated at serving Tom Branson who used to be a driver. Thomas also wants Phyliss Baxter to report back to him with gossip. Martha Levinson returns to London from America with Harold Levinson. They are Lady Cora's mother & uncle.
Martha is not a happy person where servants are concerned. She has a nasty comment for everything. Harold is also not very happy either. Lord Billingham & Charles are competing for Lady Mary's affections. Lord Robert is unhappy about Lady Rosamund for bringing Mr. Sampson to their party.
Lady Edith has become the editor of the newspaper Michael headed. He gave her power of attorney because he is still missing. She discovers that he was beaten up by a religious group of thugs. Lady Rosamund asks if Michael had a will if he turns up dead. Mr. Sampson takes the bag of Freda Dudley Ward from the table at a party. There is a letter he steals written by the Prince of Wales.
Mrs. Hughes was given a coat by Anna worn by John Bates to give to charity. Hughes finds a ticket that brought him into York the day Anna's rapist was killed. She shows that ticket to Lady Mary who suspects that John might have murdered the man.
What was in that letter written by the Prince of Wales? Does Mr. Sampson use that letter for blackmail? Will Lady Edith bring her daughter back to Downton? Did John murder the man who raped his wife Anna? Will we ever know the truth?
