4/3” opens with the lady's maid, Anna Bates walking on the grounds of the Abbey alone. She is trying hard to deal with being raped as best she can. Her husband John Bates asks if it is something he has done to her. She says no & doesn't want to be touched. Anna goes to breakfast downstairs & has to sit down next to the man who raped her. Everyone wants to know what happened to her, but she claims she cut her lip. The guests leave the Abbey after the weekend party & so does the rapist who is Lord Gillingham's valet driver.

Tony, who is Lord Gillingham does not like his valet because on this morning he rushes to get away from the Abbey. The housekeeper, Mrs. Hughes watches the valet of Lord Gillingham & suspects he was the one who had raped Anna. She was sworn to secrecy by Anna who is afraid to press charges because John might do something violent. She tries to protect him from prison.

Tom Branson runs into the lady's maid, Edna Braithwaite who wants to talk to him. He tells her he made a mistake the night before because he was drunk. She wants more than just intimacy from him, but he cannot deal with her right now. The under-butler, Thomas Barrow hears their conversation & hides behind a door that is half opened.

John tries to reach out to Anna literally & she backs away afraid of any kind of touch. She tells him she has to go to London & he is hurt because she won't talk to him. Anna asks Mrs. Hughes if she can move back upstairs away from John. She believes it is her fault for getting raped & feels dirty. Hughes tells Anna it wasn't her fault & that she needs to go to the police. Anna still is afraid John will go to prison if he takes revenge on her rapist.

Meanwhile, in London Lady Mary Crawley is late for a night on the town. She walks into a conversation where Lord Gillingham waits. He tells her that he wanted to see her again. Lady Cora had invited him for Mary & aunt Lady Rosamund Painswick for Tom. They all go to a lavish party. Mary tells Gillingham she will not be ready for another relationship, but he doesn't believe that.
