PBS Ancestors Provides Genealogical Resources

PBS ran a series created in 2000 called Ancestors. The series is not running currently on Chicago PBS stations, but Chicago area genealogists can take advantage of the content on their website.

The Ancestors website contains a large amount of information for researchers and educators. The site features a lengthy section called "Getting Started" which has information on various record types, technology, family and records at risk. A "Resource" section contains links to products, online courses available through the BYU Independent Study division of Brigham Young University and Maps. The "Tools" section contains resource guides, teacher's guide, online search capabilities and help information.

One of the most helpful resources for researchers on this site are the "Free Charts" available under "Tools." You can view and print these charts:

  • Family Group Record
  • Research Questions
  • Research Log
  • Source Notes
  • Record Selection Guide
  • Instructional Video Index
  • Timeline Pages

The charts are perfect for new researchers and seasoned researchers. Educators can use the charts and the Teacher's Guide to teach students about the importance of family history. Lesson plans and activity ideas are presented in the guide.

The Ancestors website has so much to offer genealogical researchers. So what are you waiting for? Go take a look!
