Paying less for the 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS was just released in the United States this past Sunday, and gamers in a dozen states can take advantage of a great deal, courtesy of Walmart. They can trade in an old DS for $100 in credit toward the purchase of a new 3DS; up to two devices for a total of $200 in credit. Sounds like a fantastic deal, but there's a catch—this deal is not available at Walmart stores in New Jersey, New York, or any other state within reasonable driving distance. If you want to take advantage of this deal, you'll need to be at a Walmart in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas or South Carolina—all states in the South or Midwest.

What's a thrifty gamer to do? Walmart isn't the only one offering deals, though few will be as good as an instant $100 credit. Head over to a Target location in Jersey City, North Bergen, Edgewater, or Brooklyn to take advantage of their trade-in program, where iPods, iPhones, digital cameras, video games, DVDs, Blu-rays, and yes, even DS systems, can be traded in for up to $50 credit. You can find out how much they'll pay simply by heading over to the NextWorth website and answering a few simple questions about your item.

As trade-ins and used game sales are what they are known for, GameStop is offering special trade-in deals toward the purchase of a new 3DS as well. The amount in credit granted varies by device: a DSi XL will yield $100 in GameStop credit, while a DSi is worth $75 and the DS lite is worth $50. These deals are only available in-store, so head on over to the GameStop location in Newport Centre to bring in your old systems.

Not willing to part with your old gadgets or visit a Target or GameStop store? Online retailer Amazon also has an interesting deal on their site. You'll still pay the retail price of $249.99 for a new 3DS, but a promotional credit of $25 will be applied to your account, good for one of the launch titles, like Pilotwings Resort, Nintendogs + Cats, Super Monkey Ball 3D, or Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition. In all, the credit is good for one of 18 titles, most of which sell for $39.95, meaning you'll only be paying $15 for a brand new game. Bust-a-Move Universe is the exception at $29.95, so you'd be picking up this primo puzzle game for less than $5!

The 3DS is reporting the highest first-day sales of any Nintendo handheld ever, and you can be part of that wave of early adopters while still keeping a few bucks in your pocket.
