Paying for higher education: Community college or four year university

After completing my first year at a local community college, community college has felt like the best decision I have ever made. My classmates? Well they have been expressing very similar thoughts.

The average tuition and fees for a two-year college across the country is $3,246 (CollegeBoard). If you calculate the total it takes to receive an associates degree, $6,492.

College Board says that the average cost of tuition and fees at a private institution is $30,094 per year, $22,203 for out-of-state students at a public college, and $8,893 for in-state students at public college.

By attending a two-year college and transferring to a private four year institution, you’re saving on average, $53,696. That’s $37,914 for an out-of-state student, and $11,294 for an in-state student.

In times of financial hardship, the differential in tuition and fees is there. Financially, community college is making more sense than ever.
