September 4th, 2009 -- New screens for Left 4 Dead 2 were released for PAX 2009.
Although nothing new was revealed at the show, we did get to spend some quality time with the game with some hands-on multiplayer, and see the new boss infected (Spitter, and Charger) who are now joined by 'the Jockey'.
The Jockey jumps onto your back and "rides" you, pulling you away from your comrades in a herky-jerky fashion until someone clears him off your back. Like the other new infected, the Jockey is essentially a variation on the current Infected -- in this case, the Smoker -- whereas the Charger is essentially a Hunter variant who rushes forward, grabs you, and smashes you into the ground. The Spitter is basically a Boomer variant who spews acid onto you that settles into pools on the ground, damaging you and creating a hazard area at the same time.
We also got to see the improved 'Director 2.0' AI, which seemed to make much better use of the Boss infected. The Boss infected now work together much better, and more effectively mimic the teamwork of real-world players. For example, a Jockey jumped in and incapacitated one of us, pulling us away from our team mates. Almost immediately a Boomer moved in to vomit, followed shortly by a Hunter who jumped in an incapacitated another one of us.
In short, we got our clocks cleaned and had a blast. Can't wait for this one to hit in November 2009.
