PAWS Chicago is gearing up for a day of fun this Sunday. Sunday marks the 17th Annual Angels with Tails Gold Coast event! This event will showcase hundreds of Chicago’s homeless pets that are available for adoption through a variety of rescue and shelter organizations including PAWS Chicago themselves. The event, for the 17th consecutive year will take place along Michigan Avenue, Oak Street and Delaware Place.
Approximately 20 other local rescues and shelters plan to join PAWS Chicago, our city’s largest No-Kill humane organization on this day to present to the public the very worthy and loveable animals ready and waiting for their forever homes. They will do so in almost 50 stores throughout the stated path.
The 17th Annual Angels with Tails Gold Coast, will be presented by Merrick Pet Care. It offers you the opportunity to stroll the sidewalks of Chicago this weekend, press your nose against storefront windows and sample the sheer joy that a pet can bring to your life. There will be more than 200 homeless puppies, dogs, kittens and cats on location and available for adoption.
In 1997, PAWS Chicago launched the first Angels with Tails, an event that united shelters and rescue groups from across Chicagoland for an adoption event, which showcased homeless pets along sidewalks and storefronts along Michigan Avenue and Oak Street. Many lives were saved that day and it was the beginning of greater public awareness around the staggering reality that thousands of homeless pets are needlessly killed each and every year; 42,500 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens were killed in Chicago in 1997 alone. With this awareness and the resulting media attention, the community has become more involved in finding solutions aimed at stopping this once hidden tragedy from continuing.
Since the inaugural Angels with Tails event, the number of animals killed each year in Chicago has been reduced by more than half. And although that is impressive, PAWS Chicago would really like to see the number reduced to zero!
So set aside some time this Sunday, May 18th from Noon until 4:00 p.m. and make your plan to see as many, if not all of the 50 retailers around Michigan Avenue, Oak Street and Delaware Place that you can as they will donate their storefronts and windows to the various participating animal shelters, rescue groups and PAWS Chicago so that they can showcase the animals in their care seeking a forever home.
It is truly a great event and one that you will not want to miss if you are considering adopting a furry friend to call your own. So, check it out. For a detailed map of the route and the retailers, please go to: http://angelswithtails.pawsevents.org/event-map/.
