Cletus Hercules might hide your kid's Barbie doll, but he’ll also lead you to a bold, hoppy IPA that’s well worth the trade. The toy hording mastiff/Rhodesian ridgeback of Trinity Brewing Company in Colorado Springs is one of 63 dogs featured in the new book “The BrewDogs of Colorado II,” a tribute to canines who inspire Colorado’s favorite craft brews.
Dogs, Beer, Colorado…It doesn’t get much better!” —BrewDogs
With rich photography and engaging profiles on the dogs and breweries, each page tempts a visit. Hubert, the rescued rat terrier/Chihuahua of medal-winning Lone Tree Brewing Company, was born with a rear-leg disability but can do a handstand on “front legs like Schwarzenegger’s.” Telluride Brewing Company has double gold medals for their Face Down Brown Ale, while their basset hound Gomez has a taste for steak and undies. Longmont’s Oskar Blues was named 2013 Craft Brewer of the Year by Beverage World Magazine, but equally impressive is rescued pup Lucky’s will to survive: she was just four weeks old when a tornado left her buried in rubble.
A family affair, “The BrewDogs of Colorado II” co-authors Becky Bennett and Brian Bennett teamed with daughters Lauren Olson and Kristen Olson to compile the sequel to their popular original, “The BrewDogs of Colorado.” Forward is by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, founder of Wynkoop Brewing Company and dad to rescue dog, Schuyler Colfax.
The publishers note that the majority of the dogs featured in the book were rescued. A spread is dedicated to a discussion of animal welfare and according to the website, a portion of sales will be donated to National Mill Dog Rescue to help with the care and rescue of puppy mill dogs.
