You know me; I always start at the beginning and do a Seinfeld finish at the end. I’ve been missing on the scene since the beginning of January. My father-in-law passed away at 91 years of age, a long time Medfield resident – the neighborhood just north of Hampden on Falls Road. The memorial service was at Burgee-Henss funeral home in Hampden. Attendees were invited back to the Redman’s Hall on Hickory Avenue, a quick walk through the alley behind the funeral home for a mini-wake. Cousin Kim says as we’re walking, “Have you heard, Redman’s Hall has been sold and it’s going to be a restaurant?” She states, "Will Bauer (aka Lou Catelli) is involved in some way."
Time slipped away as I was rushing to wrap up projects for clients and pack for San Francisco and the Women Chefs and Restaurateurs conference. With a big story finished for another local outlet, I’m investigating the restaurant for Redman’s Hall but it leads me to Paulie Gee’s pizza in Hampden at the old Republican Club at 3535-3537 on Chestnut Avenue a couple doors down from Gino Trioa’s Grano Emporio.
The pizza restaurant and bar is a collaboration of an elusive fellow known to the blogging world at pizzablogger, whose epiphany on the best pizza took place July 25, 2009 and as he states, “When the pies had no names.
On our anniversary weekend, my wife and I drove five hours for a pizza tasting in New Jersey with some guy named Paulie (Paul Giannone) who built a wood-fired oven in his backyard. Little did any of us know where that drive and that magical evening would eventually lead to.
If I can capture even 50% of that evening and bring it to Hampden every night, something special will happen. And I ain't gonna be satisfied with 50%.”(from their Facebook Page www.Facebook.com/PaulieGeesHampden ).
The other partner is Paulie Gee, who owns www.pauliegee.com in Brooklyn in the Greenpoint neighborhood. The Hampden opening is scheduled for sometime in early summer.
Now to stay up-to-date on what is happening at Paulie Gee’s Hampden and Hampden you can follow everyone on Twitter: @pauliegee @pizzablogger and @pauliegeesHSC .
So the question remains, was Redman’s Hall sold and is it going to be a restaurant? Did the Hampden grapevine get the information muddled and everyone was talking about Paulie Gee’s Hampden at the old Republican Club. If anyone knows, it would be Lou Catelli. Lou?
