Married couple Paula Patton and Robin Thicke have given each other permission to get raunchy with other people if it's part of a work-related performance, even if nudity is involved. According to a TMZ report published on Aug. 26, 2013, Patton (who is 37) was completely fine with the sexually charged duet of "Blurred Lines" that Thicke (who is 36) and Miley Cyrus (who is 20) did at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in New York City on Aug. 25.
During the performance, which got a lot of media attention, a scantily clad Cyrus did some "twerking" by grinding up against Thicke's crotch during the song. Cyrus also simulated masturbation, repeatedly stuck out her tongue in a sexually suggestive manner, and kissed Thicke on the neck. Most of the public's reactions to Cyrus' performance have been negative; the majority of people commenting about it on the Internet are saying that Cyrus looked "tacky" and "desperate" during the performance.
The music videos for Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" were each nominated for multiple awards at the 2013 MTV VMAs, but they didn't win any prizes at the show.
Cyrus has been dating actor Liam Hemsworth (who is 23) since 2009, and they got engaged in 2012, but there have been conflicting rumors about the current status of their on-again/off-again relationship. Hemsworth has not publicly commented on Cyrus' raunchy MTV VMA performance. The last time that Hemsworth and Cyrus were seen in public together was on Aug. 8, 2013, at the Los Angeles premiere of Hemsworth's flop movie "Paranoia." In photos taken of them on the red carpet, Cyrus is leaning her head on Hemsworth's shoulder, but he looks indifferent.
Patton and Thicke were high-school sweethearts and have been married since 2005. Their first child, a son named Julian Thicke, was born in 2010. Patton was photographed smiling and hugging Thicke backstage after the performance. And TMZ backs up this photographic evidence in an article that denies rumors that Patton flew into a rage behind the scenes after the performance.
According to TMZ: "We're told Paula knew the performance wasn't gonna be G-Rated because there were 'tons of rehearsals' before the show ... and there were no surprises during the performance. Plus, she already let him kick it with all those naked hot chicks in the 'Blurred Lines' video ... so you know she's got the stomach to watch her hubby in a super-sexually charged situation with another woman."
The uncensored version of Thicke's "Blurred Lines" music video shows him and musical collaborators Pharrell Williams and T.I. cavorting and flirting with topless models. The "Blurred Lines" song and album have reached No. 1 in several countries and are the biggest hits of Thicke's career so far.
As for naked frolicking with other people on camera, it goes both ways in the Thicke/Patton marriage. Patton has a topless scene with Denzel Washington in the crime thriller "2 Guns." Washington and Patton play lovers in the movie.
Thicke (whose parents are "Growing Pains" star Alan Thicke and former "Days of Our Lives" actress Gloria Loring) has also done some acting himself. Robin Thicke co-starred in the BET mockumentary comedy series "The Real Husbands of Hollywood" (whose first season premiered in January 2013), but he left the show after the first season, due to work commitments for his music career.
In addition to "2 Guns," Patton has two other movies released in 2013: the drama "Disconnect" and the romantic comedy "Baggage Claim," which arrives in U.S. and Canadian theaters on Sept. 27.
Sept. 18, 2013: While promoting "Baggage Claim" in several interviews, Patton addressed issue of Cyrus' twerking with Thicke at the MTV VMAs. On "Watch What Happens Live," Patton commented: "I wasn't surprised at all. Honestly, they rehearsed for three days beforehand, and I don't know how not to dance with someone having their booty in your . . . all my friends do it like that. And I don't really know what the big deal is."
In a interview on "Today," Patton said, "I don't know if you guys have been to a club lately, but that's how girls dance at the club. My friends dance with [my husband] like that. It's just what they do ... "I want him to express himself however he feels, and he lets me do the same."
