Paula Deen has type 2 diabetes and waits 3 years to let her fans know.

If you were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes wouldn't the first thing on your mind be to get it under control?  Well, my husband was in that situation 37 years ago, at age 41.  He was put on one pill a day, and given a diet, and exercise sheet.

Diabetes is the silent killer, and it can affect other parts of the body.  Len had quintuple by-pass surgery back in 1994, and since then a further 5 stents.  He has stage 4 kidney desease, which we keep in check with blood work on a regular basis, and medication.  He has diabetic eye checks, and on the whole they are normal for his age.  He has neuropathy of the feet too.

So why is he doing so good at age 78?  Eating in moderation is number one on our list.  He can have a small amount of steak once in awhile.  He will eat a slice of pizza, but it will be with a side salad.  If we go out to eat, then half of the meal is boxed, and taken home for the next day.

We do not do exchanges, but have substituted Bestlife spread for butter, diet soda for regular, and have sugar free food items for treats.

Len tries to exercise but age, arthritis, and the neuropathy has really limited this.

If you are pre-diabetic, or have diabetes then don't just ignore it.  Please take it seriously, and take control.  Len was on 40 units of insulin twice a day, and has reduced it to 18 and 20 units.  He has lost more than 20 pounds, and everyone is amazed at his achievements.
