(Updated) Legendary singer / songwriter Paul Simon, 72, along with his singer / songwriter wife, 47-year-old Edie Brickell of Edie Brickell & New Bohemians fame, were both arrested in their New Canaan, Conn. home on April 26 and charged with disorderly conduct after local police were called to the residence to investigate a family dispute. Police said today that someone from the celebrity couple’s home called 911 Saturday night, but then hung up.
MSN reported today that when police arrived on the scene, officers discovered minor injuries had been sustained and classified the incident as one of domestic violence. Police chief Leon Krolikowski wouldn’t elaborate as to whether only one or both parties sustained those minor injuries. Krolikowski did confirm that both Simon and Brickell received a summons for a misdemeanor, and that “one of them agreed to leave and go to another location.”
Based on Krolikowski’s comments though, it sounds plausible that both singers could have been in the wrong. "There was aggressiveness on both sides," he said.
"They're both victims and they have children involved and we're trying to be very cautious of that." ~ Chief Leon Krolikowski
Krolikowski also didn’t go into detail as to what caused the alleged violence. The couple was scheduled to appear today in Norwalk Superior Court for arraignment, according to The Daly News.
On the musical side of things, the Grammy winning Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer Simon is still active and just finished touring with Sting. On April 17, the better half of Simon and Garfunkel performed at “the 25th anniversary of the Rainforest Fund benefit concert in New York.”
And although the "What I Am" singer seemed to peak in 1988 when she was still with the New Bohemians, Brickell went on to have a mildly successful solo career and recently teamed up with comedian and banjo player Steve Martin to collaborate on the bluegrass album "Love Has Come For You," released in 2013. Brickell and Martin, who won a Grammy for best American Roots song from that album, begin touring together this May.
Brickell met Simon while she was performing on “Saturday Night Live” back in 1988, and Simon was on the set. The couple married in 1992. They have three children together. For more on Simon’s and Brickell’s arrest, see the video accompanying this article.
Update: When the couple appeared for their arraignment today, they were reportedly getting along just fine, said that they did not feel threatened by one another, and were lovingly holding hands, according to the Pocono Record. Simon told the judge in court that on Saturday night, “he had a rare argument” with Brickell.
“We’re going to go back home today. We’re going to watch our son play baseball,” Simon said.
