Paul Rudd signs on to play Edgar Wright's 'Ant-Man'

It appears as if Edgar Wright has found his hero. Kansas City native Paul Rudd has has signed to play the scientist turned superhero in the comic book film adaptation of "Ant-Man", which hits theatres in 2015 and is set to kick off Marvel's Phase Three of their cinematic universe.

It is unknown, which version of the character Rudd will be playing. Wright has teased that his script incorporates both Hank Pym and Scott Lang, the two main characters in the Marvel universe who have donned the Ant-Man costume, with Pym being the original.

Marvel officially confirmed the news on Thursday night, ending months of speculation that the decision was down to Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Filming is expected to begin in Georgia in 2014 with Edgar Wright (The World's End) directing from a script written by Joe Cornish.

Kevin Feige, the Marvel Studios President overseeing the MCU confirmed the casting on Marvel's website, "When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star. We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul.

"When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life."

'Anchorman 2' can't live up to its own legend but it's still pretty darn funny

In the comics, Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym is a biochemist who discovered a chemical substance that allow him to shrink down to the size of an ant, hence the name Ant-Man. Pym creates a helmet that allows him to communicate insects as well as control them and uses these powers to solve mysteries.

Pym, who first appeared in the Marvel comic Tales to Astonish #27 (and as Ant-Man in issue #35), was one of the original founders of The Avengers, so expect him to be worked into that lineup sooner rather than later.

Rudd was born in New Jersey, but at the age of 10, he and his family moved to Overland Park, KS., a suburb of Kansas City. He attended Shawnee Mission West, and the University of Kansas before embarking on his acting career. He's known for comedic roles in "Role Models", "This is 40", "Anchorman", and the recently released sequel, "Anchorman 2: the Legend Continues".

Marvel sets release dates for three mystery Phase Three films

The interesting question becomes how will Pym/Lang fit in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is set to hit theatres in May of 2015, with "Ant-Man" following up a few months later on July 31. Pym was the original creator of the villain Ultron, so it will be interesting to see if Joss Whedon and Edgar Wright try and introduce him in the "Avengers" sequel or just wait until the stand-alone movie.
