After months of fan-fueled speculation and internet chatter, reports have begun to surface that Paul Rudd has all but secured his role as Hank Pym in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man. The reports all seem to stem from TheWrap, who stated this morning that multiple sources say the actor was quickly bumped up to the #1 spot after Joseph Gordon-Levitt, another top contender for the role, announced his involvement in Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Sandman” adaptation earlier this week.
In the comics, Hank Pym is a scientist who discovers a new group of subatomic particles (named ”Pym particles”) which allow him to change his size from that of a giant down to the scale of an ant. With an intellect on par with that of Tony Stark, Pym constructs a cybernetic helmet for himself that allows him to communicate with the insect kingdom as well as control them.
While no official comment has yet to be made, it seems that industry insiders are confident that Rudd has now locked down his role in Marvel’s first installment in ‘Phase 3′ of their Cinematic Universe. If the rumor becomes true, we feel that Marvel will have nailed it once again with casting a new leading man for their franchise. After all, Marvel’s current leading man (Robert Downey Jr.) is currently only contracted for The Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Avengers 3 with no guarantee that he’ll return for more Iron Man films. If Paul Rudd steps in as Hank Pym, a character who’s also a witty, self-centered, technological genius, it may not be that difficult for Marvel to make the transition for a new wise-cracking character. Is Paul Rudd a man you can see playing Hank Pym on the big screen? Directed by Edgar Wright, Ant-Man will begin filming in May 2014 and will arrive in theaters on July 31, 2015.
