Paul Rudd lands Ant-Man role; fans wonder if alter ego is Hank Pym or Scott Lang

Paul Rudd has been cast as Ant-Man in the movie of the same title. Marvel Studios made the announcement on Dec. 19, 2013.

Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige commented on Rudd in a press release: "When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star. We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we'd ever met with about doing the work, we knew we'd found the right guy. We couldn't be more excited for our audiences to see what he's going to do to bring Ant-Man to life."

Rudd has not yet commented on landing the role of Ant-Man.

As previously reported, Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were the frontrunners to land the title role in Marvel Studios' "Ant-Man" movie, which is being directed by Edgar Wright, who co-wrote the script with “Attack the Block” director Joe Cornish.

Based on comments that fans are making on the Internet, more people seem to prefer Rudd over Gordon-Levitt in the Ant-Man role. An "Ant-Man" poll on Empire magazine's website, asking which actor should be cast as Ant-Man, had Rudd leading with the most votes.

Gordon-Levitt, who is 32, is no stranger to superhero movies. He played a cop named Blake who assists Batman in 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises." (There's a twist at the end of that movie that involves the Blake character.) Gordon-Levitt has been starring in a variety of movies in recent years, from serious dramas to action thrillers to comedies, including "Inception," "Lincoln," "(500) Days of Summer" and "Looper."

Rudd, who is 44, is mostly known for doing comedy films such as "Anchorman," "Knocked Up" and "Role Models." He has never been in a superhero movie and is rarely in action films or dramas, so playing Ant-Man is a real departure for him. However, with Wright directing the "Ant-Man" movie, it could be an indication that the movie will have many comedic elements.

Wright is best known for his collaborations with actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in the comedy films 2004's "Shaun of the Dead," 2007's "Hot Fuzz" and 2013's "The World's End." Wright also directed the 2010 comedy film "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World."

Marvel Studios has scheduled "Ant-Man" to be released on July 31, 2015. The plot of the movie is being kept confidential for now, and other principal cast members have not been announced yet. Ant-Man is the superhero whose original alter ego was scientist Hank Pym. However, in recent years, Ant-Man's alter ego in the comics has been Scott Lang.

Fans on the Internet have been wondering which alter ego Ant-Man will have in the movie: Hank Pym or Scott Lang?

There is also speculation that Ant-Man might be in an upcoming "Avengers" movie, but it's too early to know if that will happen.

Here is a sampling of comments from Twitter:

"So Paul Rudd is Ant-Man. Not mad at this casting, he could be Pym or Lang (imo). But I'm still hoping they go for Pym."

"Just a thought… Could we have Paul Rudd play the Scott Lang Ant-Man and then mention Dr Hank Pym as the creator of Ultron in A2?"

"Paul Rudd is gonna play Ant-man huh? My money is the version of the character will be Scott Lang and not Hank Pym."

"Hoping that Ant-Man isn't Scott Lang in the movie. More of a Pym guy myself."

"Paul Rudd for Ant-Man is awesome. But the big question is: Is he playing Hank Pym or Scott Lang?"

"I LOVE everything about Paul Rudd being cast as Ant-Man. Now I wanna know if it's Hank Pym or Scott Lang."

"Paul Rudd confirmed as starring in Ant-Man. But is he Hank Pym Ant, Man or Scott Lang Ant Man? And will it be enough to make me want to see?"

"Paul Rudd is officially starring in Ant-Man per @Marvel The only question now is whether he's Hank Pym or Scott Lang. #justnotOGrady."

"Do we know what Ant-Man Paul Rudd is playing? Hank Pym, Scott Lang, or Eric O'Grady? I'll guess Pym, but who know knows."

"The press release never mentions Hank Pym which may mean Rudd will be portraying Scott Lang as Ant-Man."

"No mention of Hank Pym or Scott Lang in @Marvel’s official release about Rudd playing Ant Man. Which will he play? @AgentM? #seeeeeekrits?"
