Paul McCartney will play his first concert in San Diego since 1976 Sept. 28 at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres baseball team, the Petco Park Insider reported July 9. The information for the show was leaked ahead of an official announcement by the Padres and AEG/Goldenvoice at 10 a.m. PT. Wednesday.Tickets for the show go on sale at 10 a.m. July 18, according to the Insider. A presale will be held from July 14-17. On the 28th, the Padres will be on their final road trip of the season playing the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.
The concert announcement was hinted at Tuesday after identical press releases were released by both AEG Live/Goldenvoice and the San Diego Padres trumpeting the announcement with the words “Out There,” the title for McCartney's tour. The Padres Twitter account @Padres also tweeted, “Special #PetcoPark anniversary announcement coming tomorrow. Stay tuned.”
Associated Press writer Bernie Wilson @berniewilson was apparently the first to spill the beans after posting on his Twitter account Tuesday night, “Paul McCartney will indeed play Petco Park gig; date to be announced tomorrow.” He also made a couple of humorous comments in additional tweets, including “If Paul McCartney does play Petco Park, maybe he can also score an interview for the vacant #Padres GM job.”
McCartney already has concerts set for Aug. 10 in Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium, Aug. 12 in Phoenix at US Airways Center and Aug. 14 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, and then a long gap until Oct. 2, when he'll play Lubbock, Texas and a string of June postponed shows begins.
The last time McCartney played San Diego was in June, 1976 with Wings at the San Diego Sports Arena. He played a private charity show in 2003 in nearby Rancho Santa Fe that received much publicity. It was a birthday surprise for the wife of financier Ralph Whitworth to celebrate her 50th birthday on Feb. 22, 2003.
