Paul McCartney to announce San Diego concert Wednesday -- report

San Diego is buzzing with rumors of an “online announcement” to be made at 10 a.m. Pacfic Time Wednesday about an event coming “Out There” to San Diego. And it appears very likely that the event will be none other than Paul McCartney playing a concert at the city's Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres baseball team. It would be his first public concert in the city since the 1970s.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper and local station NBC 7 in the city, identical press releases were issued Tuesday by both AEG Live/Goldenvoice and the San Diego Padres revealing the announcement and mentioning the “Out There” hint. AEG has promoted other Out There! Shows. The Padres official Twitter account @Padres also put out the tantalizing words, “Special #PetcoPark anniversary announcement coming tomorrow. Stay tuned.”

Associated Press writer Bernie Wilson @berniewilson apparently spilled the beans on his Twitter account. “Paul McCartney will indeed play Petco Park gig; date to be announced tomorrow.” Wilson also made a couple of humorous comments in additional tweets, saying “If McCartney plays Petco, will he give a #Padres player a shoutout like Mick Jagger did with David Wells in '05? Norf? Cabby? Q? Cash?” and “If Paul McCartney does play Petco Park, maybe he can also score an interview for the vacant #Padres GM job.”

The online announcement will be made on the Padres website. McCartney already has concerts set for Aug. 10 in Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium, Aug. 12 in Phoenix at US Airways Center and Aug. 14 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, and then a long gap until Oct. 2, when he'll play Lubbock, Texas and a string of postponed shows originally scheduled for June begins. The shows were moved back to October after McCartney became ill with a virus.

McCartney played San Diego with Wings in June, 1976 at the San Diego Sports Arena. Years later, in 2003, he played a private show in nearby Rancho Santa Fe. It was a birthday surprise for the wife of financier Ralph Whitworth to celebrate her 50th birthday on Feb. 22, 2003. Whitworth hired out a club for a private party and had Paul McCartney perform for a cool $1 million fee for charity. The fee was donated to Adopt-A-Minefield.
