Paul McCartney's nervousness on Sullivan show didn't last long, historian says

If Paul McCartney seemed a bit nervous as the Beatles' debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show” began, it quickly passed, Beatles historian Debra MacLaughlan-Dumes told Beatles Examiner.

“In the first set, he's incredibly nervous, almost misses the right notes.”

But he didn't stay nervous for long.

“Second set, he's so happy! He realizes he'd conquered America,” she notes.

She said on the other hand, the other Beatles had no sign of nerves of performing for the first time in front of an American TV audience.

“The others have no issues, other than John not knowing what people are laughing at when the subtitle says 'Sorry girls, he's married.' John couldn't read the monitor, being blind as six bats.”

But McCartney got over his initial nerves and “by the second set, Paul is clearly feeling much better.”

The CBS tribute to the Beatles' debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” “The Night They Changed America: A Grammy Tribute to the Beatles,” is being repeated Wednesday.
