As with the Times Square show, Paul and the band, playing from the back of an open truck, only played a few songs, all of them from his just-released “NEW” album. The day was a busy one for McCartney, who also signed “NEW” CDs at HMV in London, was interviewed by Geoff Lloyd of Absolute Radio and taped “The Graham Norton Show” for the BBC. (Note: BBC America airs the Norton show, but their website doesn't show an airdate for McCartney's appearance yet.)
Richard Porter of Beatles in London.com was there and sent us this account. You can see pictures of the concert on this page.
“Wow! What an afternoon! I got a text about 11.30 a.m. saying Paul McCartney was doing a pop-up concert in Covent Garden at lunch time. I rushed out the house straight away and got to Covent Garden by 12.15. There weren't that many people there yet so I got right to the front.
“I had a problem though. I was supposed to do a tour at 2 p.m. and I was worried I wouldn't be able to stay for the show. I was getting desperate when finally Paul onstage at about 1.30 p.m. He looked great and walked right in front of me to get to the stage.
“Paul sang 'New,' 'Everybody Out There,' 'Save Us' and 'Queenie Eye.' As he had a bit of extra time, he repeated 'New.'”
Rusty Anderson posted one of the pictures Richard took on his Facebook page.
You can see the full show here.
The show came on the 56th anniversary of McCartney's first gig with the Quarrymen at Liverpool's Clubmoor Hall, which closed just yesterday.
