Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell may be getting ready to be married very very shortly. Reports from People magazine say the couple posted a notice of intention to marry at the Old Marylebone Town Hall in the city of Westminster in the UK on Wednesday. You can see a copy of the notice at this link.
If so, that sets the stage for the wedding to happen in the near future. According to local regulations, the couple can marry starting Sept. 30, 16 days after the notice is filed.
If the couple were to marry at Marylebone, it would be the same place where McCartney married Linda Eastman, then 27, on March 12, 1969. According to a BBC report, police on that day had to step in and hold off teenagers who were dismayed over the Beatle's wedding. Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach were also were married there in 1981.
So what did Paul and Nancy have to do to reportedly set the wedding gears in motion? The legal requirements and details of what it takes to file the notice and to be married are spelled out in the site's online wedding brochure (available in a pdf file here). According to the brochure, couples must first give notice in their home district and the notice must be made in person by the couple and signed by both the groom and bride.
For the notice, the couple had to provide proof of name, age, marital status and nationality, evidence of their address and the fee for giving notice. The brochure indicates that if either member of the couple had been divorced (and both have), they needed to show legal proof of the divorce. "If the divorce was granted in England or Wales, you will need to show a court-stamped copy of the divorce Decree Absolute," a condition that applies to Paul McCartney, since his divorce to Heather Mills was finalized in the UK.
The notice is valid for a year, in this case, Sept. 14, 2012, although a "provisional booking" for the wedding can be made more than a year ahead. Once the notices have been given, the couple must wait at least 16 days before the marriage can take place. The online brochure also indicates couples can have discreet wedding ceremonies if they wish.
Superintendant Registrar Alison Cathcart, who reportedly met with the couple, told People, "They were lovely, very relaxed and very charming and clearly in love with each other. They were excited."
