Paul McCartney featured in 'Billy Joel: Live at Shea Stadium' to air this March

Paul McCartney's surprise appearance during Billy Joel's "Last Play at Shea" shows in 2008 will be featured in "Billy Joel: Live at Shea Stadium," to air on PBS as part of its "Great Performances" series in March, the network announced today.

"Billy Joel: Live at Shea Stadium" will also be released a CD/DVD set as well as a stand-alone DVD and stand-alone Blu-ray disc on March 8 by Sony Legacy.

In "Live at Shea Stadium," Joel and his band perform their own hits, and also duets with guests like McCartney (“I Saw Her Standing There,” “Let it Be”), Bennett (“New York State of Mind”) and Brooks (“Shameless”). Unlike the companion documentary "Last Play at Shea" which features excerpts of the concert's music, "Live at Shea Stadium" features entire songs, the network said.

Shortly before the demolition of New York City’s Shea Stadium in July 2008, Joel gave two concerts at the arena that featured special guests including Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks and McCartney. The "Last Play at Shea" concerts on July 16 and July 18, 2008, featured a combined audience of 110,000 fans. The final section of Shea Stadium was torn down in 2009. 

Paul Crowder’s film, "Last Play at Shea," a documentary about those concerts, which intertwined the history of the stadium and the New York Mets with Joel’s biography, premiered at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival last October.   "Last Play at Shea" will be released on DVD in February.
