Day one of the Tour Midwest Classic began Thursday July 24 at the Nicklaus Golf Course at Lionsgate in Overland Park, Kan. The tournament offers a total purse of $600,000 with $108, 000 going to the winner.

At the end of the first round, Paul Haley II was the leader at seven under par. Haley began his round on the 10th hole with three pars. He made birdie on the par five 13th and 15th holes, plus birdies on 16 and 17 to make the turn at 32. Making the turn on number one his second shot found the bottom of the cup for an eagle. He made birdie on 2 and 3 before making a bogey on 5. On number 6 his second shot from the fairway found the intermediate rough and his third from the rough landed on the fringe. He put his fourth shot on the green, but took two putts to drop the ball in the cup for a double bogey. He was able to make birdie on the par three 8th hole and one final birdie on the number 9 his closing hole.

Four players finished the first day tied for second place. Sebastian Cappelen shot a bogey free round to finish at six under par. Manuel Villega and Shane Bertsch made seven birdies and one bogey for the six under par. Mark Hubbard shot a bogey free round to finish at six under par.

Other notables in the field Jason Gore, former PGA Tour player made birdies on 3, 7, and 9 to make the turn at three under par. The back nine was uneventful as he made par on all nine holes and finish the round in a tie for 21st. Billy Mayfair scored two birdies on his back nine and a bogey on 8 to finish the day at one under par. Casey Wittenberg finished the day at one under par posting five birdies and four bogeys for his first round.
