The Amazing Spider-Man sequel continues to make waves as sources reveal that Paul Giamatti may currently be in negations with Sony Pictures to play Rhino. The rumor first broke on THR, who reported that actress Felicity Jones may also be talking to Sony for an unspecified role in Marc Webb’s upcoming sequel, but it’s the hint that Giamatti may take on the Rhino that has everyone buzzing.
First introduced in "The Amazing Spider-Man" #41 (1966), the Rhino was portrayed as a Russian citizen who donned a superhuman ‘Rhino’ suit that gave him both super-strength and super-speed as he tangled with Spider-Man in the early years. Later on, the character evolved to become somewhat of an ally of Spider-Man, assisting Peter Parker on several occasions in recent storylines.
Giamatti has even expressed that he’s always been a long-time fan of the character.
“I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid,” he told ShowbizSpy in 2011. “It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies,’ but maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me…If they ever go with The Rhino I would be ready and waiting.”
Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man sequel stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Dane DeHaan, Jamie Foxx and Shailene Woodley and will arrive in theaters on May 2, 2014.
