Paul Giamatti is in talks to play Marvel supervillain in Columbia’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” a spokesman for the studio tells me. The deal isn’t inked yet, but that goes a long way toward confirming that the sequel to “The Amazing Spider-Man” will have two villains. Jamie Foxx is on board, reportedly as high-voltage bad guy Electro.
The same source also tells me that Felicity Jones (“Brideshead Revisited,” “Like Crazy”) is also in negotiations for an unspecified role.
Giamatti and Jones would be the latest additions to a growing cast of impressive names. In addition to newcomer Foxx, Dane DeHaan (“Chronicle,” “Lawless,” “The Place Beyond the Pines”) is on board to play Harry Osborn. Shailene Woodley (“The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” “The Descendants”) will play Mary Jane Watson. Emma Stone, Sally Field and Martin Sheen reprise their roles from the first installment. Andrew Garfield again plays the title role.
Marc Webb, who helmed “The Amazing Spider-Man,” again takes the director’s reins, from a script by Alex Kurtzman and Jeff Pinkner from a story by James Vanderbilt. Production is slated to begin early this year. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is scheduled to open May 2, 2014.
