Paul Broun will run for US Senate in 2014

Tuesday night, at the Georgia C.H.A.R.G.E. (Citizens Helping America Restore Government Ethics) meeting in Lawrenceville, Niki Broun, the wife of U.S. Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga), announced that her husband will run for U.S. Senate in 2014.

The seat now belongs to Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga) who announced his retirement last week.

Both Niki and Paul Broun were in attendance at the Old Town Tavern Lawrenceville meeting, but Rep. Broun did not mention his 2014 plans in his speech.

Andrew O’Shea of Viralread.com, who attended the meeting, reported that only after the congressman finished his presentation and sat down, his wife got up and announced to the crowd that her husband has her blessing and will indeed enter the 2014 race. The formal announcement should come out next week.

Broun is now the first official (sort of) candidate in what is shaping up to be a very competitive and most watched primary and general election in the nation.

Broun represents Georgia’s 10th congressional district.

Karen Handel, former Georgia Secretary of State and 2010 gubernatorial candidate, also attended and spoke at the C.H.A.R.G.E. meeting. Her name has been mentioned as a possible candidate for that same Senate seat; however it is more likely that she will run for U.S. House of Representatives.

As a side story, O’Shea got himself in a little trouble this morning, when he posted the Broun announcement story on his blog but shaped it in a more scandalous way.

O’Shea suggested that Broun “crashed” the meeting and stole the spotlight form Handel.

C.H.A.R.G.E. posted a statement on their Facebook page accusing O’Shea of inaccurate reporting. The organization said both politicians were invited to attend and speak at the meeting and that both are member of C.H.A.R.G.E., a conservative-leaning ethics group.

“The drama with which one Mr. Andrew O'Shea loaded into his blog was totally over the top! I would suggest to Mr. O'Shea that he get his facts straight before he writes a POLITICAL blog!” said a statement on C.H.A.R.G.E. Facebook page.
